When you are thinking about doing public relations for non-profits, the first thing that you are going to need to know is that you need to get more experience. You can do this through getting other jobs in the field, through volunteer work and through internships, but no matter what you are doing, you are going to need the experience to back you up. There are far too many people who have good intentions but who have no idea of how they are going to be able to get the work done. There are some things that can definitely be taught, but you also need to be in a place where you are able to find the right teachers. The more experience that you can bring to bear, the better off you are going to be.
Take some time and look into what you know about budgeting. If you are working for a nonprofit, there is a very good chance that money is going to be tight on a semi-permanent basis. Even if you have recently gotten a good donation, you need to keep looking and you will even need to look into being able to ask those first people to donate again! Part of being the public relations arm of a non-profit means being able to ask for money, so is this something that you can do? Take some time and look into your experiences and make sure that you can figure out what your options are. This is something that is important to resolve in your mind before you get started.
When you are interested in working in non-profit companies, consider how your networking skills are. No matter where you end up, the networking that you do can make a huge difference to how successful you are. This can be an important part of the way that your company and your cause move forward. Do you want to learn more about the non-profits and do you know who the movers and shakers are? If not, you need to learn!
Consider how public relations can aid a cause that you love and go to work!
