A public relations occupation is all about building a positive image and maintaining the good reputation of a person or service or product through the creation and distribution of information that will serve to enhance or develop this image or reputation. Depending on what or who is being promoted to the public or the target market, the public relations work will need the use of multimedia materials such as photos, videos, press releases, leaflets, brochures, audio tapes, and other forms of media materials that will boost the image or reputation of the client, product, or service.

Where and How to Get PR Jobs

These jobs can be found in different companies from various industries and sectors such as entertainment, government or public offices, educational institutions or agencies, private offices or companies that are into business or other professions. Public relations employment can be found in private relations companies or firms that are contracted by other companies or individuals that need their work. On the other hand, some PR professionals work independently, after working several years in a company or PR firm. They usually have more flexible hours, and have built a good PR reputation, a network of people they can easily coordinate with, and established clients whom they can work for at anytime.

Public relations jobs are perfect for people who are highly creative, can work very well independently or with a team, have good interpersonal and communications skills, familiar and skilled at developing multimedia materials, and hard working. Anyone who has good qualities, basic knowledge, and necessary skills in this kind of job can move up the ladder and create a good public relations career. A public relations specialist, for instance, can later on become a senior public relations specialist or after a good number of years can move up to become a public relations manager. A public relations manager can also advance to become a public relations director or consultant. Each higher position will depend on the qualifications of the professional who is able to meet them.

Sometimes public relations jobs which started for some people in another field or industry can allow them to apply for a higher position across a different industry or sector. However, their jobs with their new employers may require them to learn and unlearn a few things before they can successfully transition from their old job to the new field where they will have to work with people who have a different background from his or her old field.

But the basic knowledge and skills they have will still be very useful in their new public relations employment. An example of this is a PR professional who came from the academe who is used to dealing with academic executives who require public relations work with their school programs and projects to encourage more enrollments and expansion of their academic work. A transition to a government or public office which will require their expertise in building or maintaining the reputation of an official will make a difference with how they work.

Requirements for a PR

Some companies or employers are not strict with their requirements from public relations jobs applicants. The skills and basic qualities which are important in the job are usually the preference of most employers. However, those who have a bachelor's degree in advertising, marketing, or journalism may have the advantage in a public relations occupation.

The annual salary of a public relations specialist may range from $38,643 to $50,531. On the other hand, a public relations manager can earn an average of $70,000 a year. These salaries may still vary by industry, size of the company or organization, location, and qualifications. A more lucrative public relations career from a large and reputable company or organization or by consultancy work may give a PR professional more than $100,000 in annual earnings. Some incentives and bonuses may also be included in the salary package.

A public relations occupation may mean hard work and a lot of creativity in some companies and industries such as entertainment and public offices, but additional benefits include travel and meeting up with more people which can already be an advantage when one is thinking about establishing his or her own public relations company after several years.
