The world of PR employment is vaster than most people realize. To the uninitiated, public relations work entails little more than issuing press releases. To those on the outside, this may seem to be all such professionals do. To those on the inside, such a description borders on insulting. PR professionals have a wide range of duties they are required to perform. The work they are required to do as part of their daily tasks is complex and draws from several different disciplines. For those seeking a career in public relations, this is definitely good news. The more opportunities for such work exists the more job offers one can have.

Interestingly, there may even be jobs in public relations field many people are qualified for and do not even realize that they are qualified. For those that may be seriously wondering what type of jobs exist out there, here is a look at five of the major jobs open to those wishing to enter into the field of public relations:

Public Relations Director: While no one can start at the top, there is no rule that says this overview cannot begin with the job that exists at the top. A PR Director can be considered the prime personnel and directional manager of a public relations firm or public relations division in a company. Obviously, a person seeking a public relations director job needs much experience in the field. Many that would apply for such a position may already work as a PR Director and may have been doing so for some time. However, there are those that can be promoted into a PR Director position from a lower rung on the ladder. Again, you cannot start at the top so you have to reach it. sometimes, this is overlooked and qualified applicants many not expand their PR job search to include these positions even though they may very well be more than qualified to perform them. Don't make such an unfortunate oversight. Instead, put forth your resume and see if positive results follow.

Civil Servant Public Affairs Representative: Contrary to popular belief, not all public relations professionals work in the private sector. There are many open positions in the public sector as well. Such positions have strong job security and solid pay/benefits. Those hoping for a stable career in public relations may wish to look towards the government for additional opportunities.

Social Networking and New Media Expert: This can be considered more of a generic job description title than a specific one. Different public relations firms will have different titles for jobs of this nature but they will all revolve around the same basic purpose: to use the internet, social networks, and new media communications system to disseminate information. The audience that can be reached through the new media can be considered significant. However, just because the audience is significant does not mean that it can be easily accessed. A clear understanding of how to use the online mediums to attract and inform them is required. Those with knowledge in such systems may find that a search for PR jobs is easier than they thought...although the job is never one that is easy.

Event Public Relations Coordinator: Concerts and sporting events would not likely draw much of a crowd if no one knew they existed. Public relations professionals that serve the promotional and news related capacity of informing the public and the media of such events perform a very important task that should not be overlooked. Those that have a love for public events and public relations may find such positions quite appealing.

PR Editor: Press releases cannot go out without editorial oversight. Allowing them to do so would be potentially disastrous on many levels. This is where the job of the PR editor comes into play. Such a position might not be the most glamorous of PR employment but it does serve a vital role and one that should never be overlooked...least of all by those qualified to perform such work and those who are up to its duties and tasks.
