This position is responsible for providing strategic public relations counsel and implementing public relations efforts in coordination with the marketing team across Deloitte’s $3 billion Government and Public Services (GPS) practice, which includes federal and state and local government as well as higher education institutions.
The Public Relations Senior Manager oversees the practice’s media relations strategy and planning initiatives that are integrated with its marketing campaigns. The ideal candidate will be a public relations professional with a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with individuals at all levels of a matrix organization, coach leaders on media interviews, and be a resource for reporters covering the government management, technology and other good government issues.
What you’ll do:
As the GPS public relations lead in Deloitte Services LP you will contribute to the growth and development of our organization in a variety of ways, including:
Serve as a strategic trusted advisor to leadership, business and key stakeholders across the practice
Develop and drive public relations programs that support telling how GPS is making an impact for our clients and the public, and position us to grow work with current clients and perspective clients
Develop public relations strategies focused on key business priorities and execute this strategy across priority campaigns to build Deloitte’s brand in the marketplace
Collaborate closely with the GPS marketing team as well as other Deloitte industry PR leads, and public relations leads across Deloitte’s businesses to ensure messaging, reporter outreach, and signature issue positioning are aligned
Manage external public relations agencies, tracking budget, monthly reporting and delivery of support to meet business goals
Build and/or strengthen key reporter relationships, staying current on relevant news outlets, reporters and their areas of focus, and proactively pitch Deloitte leaders, thought leadership and client impact stories
Build relationships and collaborate with organizations and communications professionals across the government ecosystem including government agencies, non-profit organizations, trade associations and other teaming private sector companies
Connect frequently with marketing, account leaders, client project teams and other stakeholders to stay abreast of new solutions, client successes and other notable milestones for potential public relations efforts
Work closely with crisis communications, risk, and other leaders to develop appropriate responses and/or messaging related to Deloitte’s government business
The team:
The Public Relations Lead serves on the GPS marketing and communications team and is a strategic advisor to key business leaders and stakeholders within the GPS practice. The role reports to the Government & Public Services Industry Marketing Leader and is also a member of the Industry PR team with a dotted line to the Industry Public Relations Leader.
Skills and competencies:
Deep understanding of government and B2C public relations, with a strong background in media relations best practices, reporter engagement, connection and use of social media to amplify media coverage
Familiarity with government ecosystem including federal and state agencies, industry associations and government oversight and contracting
Experience with crisis communication and working in coordination with government relations and public policy at the federal and/or state levels
Successfully managed external agencies
Executive presence and strong communication skills, comfortable managing to results - provides strategic counsel, asks good questions, challenges the status quo, suggests alternatives and can articulate pros and cons
High level of comfort with ambiguity and fluid priorities; ability to manage multiple and complex priorities efficiently and effectively
Ability to make connections in highly matrixed environment, with eye on collaboration and integration, across all levels of the organization
Strong listening and persuasive communication skills; able to gain consensus through influence and pivot when warranted
Ability to work in a virtual environment
Qualifications:
Required:
12 years of experience in public relations, with a focus on government, B2C marketing and communications strategy and planning; experience in executive branch of federal or state government preferred and professional services experience a plus
Undergraduate degree, ideally with a focus in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations or a related business field
Deep understanding of public relations strategies and how public relations can provide measurable results
Deep understanding of social media strategy and tools
Experience serving as an on-the-record spokesperson, working under tight deadlines and serving multiple clients at once
Experience managing complex governance and stakeholder environment, such as across multiple agencies/departments and/or large corporation with multiple divisions
Experience collaborating with external entities on join marketing and communications initiatives
Strong writing and communication skills, sound judgment and a nose for news
Executive presence
Travel up to 25% (while travel of up to 25% is a requirement of the role, due to COVID-19, non-essential travel has been suspended until further notice.)
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future
