The health and safety of our valued employees are of the utmost importance to us. Due to the pandemic, we’ve gone temporarily remote with the option to work in our Darien, Illinois office. As a result, only local candidates will be considered for this position.
We’re looking for a skilled writer and public relations professional to join our team as a Public Relations Coordinator
. The coordinator will stay on top of health care trends and changes that impact the field of sleep medicine and communicate clear, accurate, and concise messages in support of the AASM. 
The ideal candidate will have a strong writing background with media relations experience and the ability to take scientific information and tailor the messaging to appropriate audiences with precision and ease.
What You’ll Do:
Craft and implement communications strategies to position the organization as the leader in the field  
Assist in the periodic review of communications strategies to evaluate the effectiveness and identify new opportunities  
Write press releases, media alerts, letters to the editor, advertisements, web content, articles, blog posts, reports, and other targeted communications to advance public relations initiatives 
Coordinate media interviews with organizational spokespersons, equipping them with relevant talking points 
Coordinate and manage the press room for the annual meeting 
Monitor the media to track overall coverage, evaluate campaign effectiveness and respond to breaking news 
Develop, cultivate and maintain a working relationship with national and local media contacts 
Develop and pitch stories and ideas to local and national reporters 
Train spokespersons for the organization on key messages and interview techniques 
Provide staff support to the Public Awareness Advisory Committee by attending monthly calls and coordinating outreach efforts 
Contribute original content to the public education website, providing accurate scientific and medical information in plain language that addresses challenges related to health literacy 
Provide collaborative support to address the communications needs of other departments by drafting, reviewing, and editing content including letters, brochures, fact sheets, infographics, e-newsletters, and web copy 
Ensure consistent adherence to professional writing standards and house style through all communication channels 
Assist with executing PR plans and initiatives with internal and external partners 
Support the organization’s social media outreach as needed  
This position will require some travel, which will include weekends. 
What We Need:
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or related field
Minimum two years of professional experience in public relations, organizational communications, or a similar role
Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills
A clear understanding of appropriate professional communication
Ability to interpret and share scientific and medical information for public understanding
Self-motivated, self-starter with the capacity to manage multiple assignments simultaneously
Strong interpersonal communication skills with an ability to collaborate with colleagues at all levels of the organization
Exceptional attention to detail
Consistent use of sound judgment when making decisions
Ability to identify and implement creative solutions to logistical problems
Strong project management skills
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
Working knowledge of Associated Press (AP) style
Familiarity with media monitoring platforms such as Cision
Bonus Skills:
Prior experience in a medical or health care association
